Also a call for truth, transparency, and control of power
Journalism is not a business or the daily newspaper; it’s what we use to see the world. It is a voice, a shield and our primary instrument to navigate the chaotic global environment. Real journalism is for the people, whether in ink or on the radio, on the airwaves, or via internet feeds. It can champion our narratives, uphold our rights, and illuminate the tough truths.
Here is why strong, independent journalism remains indispensable to us all
The Human Story comes in three parts. There are three parts of The Human Story
Official statements and numbers come before human lives. We should not merely have raw statistics; we should have the lived realities behind those statistics. Journalists use these tools of vivid reporting, photojournalism and on-the-ground coverage to put us right in the room. They let us experience the emotion, the struggle and history through the eyes of regular people. This is what makes people feel empathy, transcending boundaries and bringing people together.
To serve as our public watchdog
Unchecked power always corrupts, and corrupt people always abuse their power. CITIZENS’ NEED FOR AN AGGRESSIVE WATCHDOG TO PROTECT THEIR INTERESTS. The purpose of investigative journalism is to shed light on the darkest corners of government, corporate boardrooms, and other powerful institutions. Journalists expose bribery, systemic abuse and hidden conflicts of interest, making the powerful accountable to the people who they serve. The fear of the masses being exposed is usually our greatest weapon for combating injustice.
An informed public is the keystone of a healthy democracy. We need verified and reliable facts to make informed decisions about our families, our finances, our health, and our vote. Journalism nourishes the public discussion on issues at stake: About the need for real journalism in a society that needs it most
Government Policy: How the law directly affects our everyday experiences
Economic Reality: Where money goes and how markets impact us.
Community Needs: The power of community to bring issues to the national agenda.
But if there’s no accurate news, then we’re left to do our best to chart a path into the future. Independent reporting provides us with the means of speaking out, asking for more, and voting wisely.
The future belongs to an enlightened public
Journalism at its heart is a vital public service. It reminds us to be vigilant, reassures our freedom and helps us create a more equitable society. However, journalism has to save us; we must save and demand high-quality journalism, demanding honesty, rigour, and independence, not clicks and commentary. If journalism remains on the public agenda, we can have the clarity and strength to make a better tomorrow together.
